With the onset of summer and rising temperatures as early as March, food items are more prone to spoilage, and milk is among the most affected. In hot weather, milk can curdle quickly due to rapid bacterial growth, creating inconvenience for households. However, a few simple and effective methods can help keep milk fresh for longer, even without a refrigerator.
One practical method is to use a wet cotton cloth. After boiling the milk, it should be cooled completely. Once cooled, the container can be covered with a clean, damp cotton cloth and placed in a cool, well-ventilated area. The evaporation from the wet cloth creates a cooling effect, which helps maintain the milk at a lower temperature and delays spoilage. Adding a small pinch of baking soda while boiling the milk can also help extend its freshness.
Another effective technique is to place the vessel containing boiled milk in a larger container filled with cold water. This method quickly reduces the temperature of the milk and keeps it cool for a longer period. Lower temperatures significantly slow down bacterial growth, thereby preventing the milk from curdling.
Adding a pinch of salt to milk during boiling is another simple remedy. Salt has mild antibacterial properties, which help inhibit the growth of bacteria responsible for spoilage. This can be particularly useful in households without refrigeration facilities.
Maintaining proper hygiene is equally important in preserving milk. All utensils used for boiling and storing milk must be thoroughly cleaned and free from contaminants. Unclean containers can introduce bacteria, increasing the chances of milk turning sour quickly. By following these easy practices, milk can be kept fresh for longer durations, even during the peak summer season.
