The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has announced that cash payments at toll plazas will be completely discontinued from April 10, 2026. Going forward, all toll collections on national highways will be digital, with FASTag remaining the primary payment method.
For vehicles without a valid FASTag, payments can be made through UPI, though at an additional charge of 25% above the standard toll fee. This move aims to streamline traffic flow at toll plazas, particularly during peak travel periods, and promote the widespread adoption of FASTag annual passes.
Authorities have clarified that toll employees are empowered to stop vehicles refusing both FASTag and UPI payments. An e-notice can be issued for non-payment, and if the toll remains unpaid for three days, the fee may be doubled.
Additionally, the longstanding practice of toll-free passage upon showing government ID has been abolished for private vehicles. Only vehicles carrying a valid Exempt FASTag will be allowed to bypass toll payments. This is expected to reduce misuse of exemptions and minimize disputes at toll booths.
With these measures, NHAI hopes to reduce long queues at toll plazas and encourage faster, more efficient highway travel.
