8th Pay Commission: How much will your salary increase if you apply a fitment factor of 3.83 or 4.0? Learn the math

Central employees and pensioners are eagerly awaiting the recommendations of the Eighth Pay Commission. The most debated issue is the fitment factor. Employees' and pensioners' organizations have demanded fitment factors of 3.83 and 4.0. However, the Eighth Pay Commission has not yet decided on a final fitment factor. Therefore, the figures currently being discussed are merely proposals and estimates.

The fitment factor is the multiplier used to convert the old basic pay into the basic pay in the new pay structure. The fitment factor in the Sixth Pay Commission was 1.86, while the fitment factor in the Seventh Pay Commission was 2.57.

If the basic pay is 56100 then what is the math?

Using a 3.83 fitment factor, the approximate new basic pay would be 56,100 × 3.83 = 214,863. However, using a 4.0 fitment factor would be 224,400. This means there's a difference of approximately 9,537 between the two proposals.

How much increase in basic pay of Rs 35,400?

At 3.83, the new basic pay would be ₹135,582, while at 4.0, it would be ₹141,600. The difference between these two figures is ₹6,018. However, this should not be considered the final salary. An employee's actual monthly salary isn't determined solely by the fitment factor. DA, HRA, transport allowance, and other perks are also important.

The Central Government appointed the Eighth Pay Commission, headed by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, on November 3, 2025. The Commission has been given 18 months to submit its report. Therefore, the final report is expected around May-June 2027. The Central Government will then consider the recommendations and make a final decision.

Therefore, the salary figures currently being shown based on a 3.83 or 4.0 fitment factor are only estimates. Only after the final decision will it be clear how much the basic and total salary increases will be for central government employees.
