8th Pay Commission: Major update on the 8th Pay Commission, Level 8 employees will receive 18 lakh arrears; read how...

An important update has emerged regarding the Eighth Pay Commission. The Eighth Pay Commission was implemented on January 1, 2026. If the Eighth Pay Commission report is implemented, central government employees will receive a significant portion of their arrears. This issue has been raised strongly in the Commission's meetings held in various cities across the country.

The next meeting of the Eighth Pay Commission will be held in Bengaluru on October 7th and 8th. Previous meetings have been held in cities such as Chennai, Puducherry, Kolkata, Lucknow, Bhubaneswar, and Delhi. After the Eighth Pay Commission submits its report, a notification will be issued by the government. A decision will then be made regarding employees' arrears. Currently, central government employees receive salaries and pensions based on the Seventh Pay Commission.

The fitment factor is essential for calculating an employee's salary increase under the Eighth Pay Commission. Several organizations representing employees and pensioners have already made various demands regarding the fitment factor. The commission may set a fitment factor of 2.15, 2.28, or 2.57. No official announcement has been made yet. Discussions are currently underway regarding the amount of arrears employees will receive based on this fitment factor.

The term of the Eighth Pay Commission is 18 months. The Commission's notification was issued in November 2025. Therefore, the Commission's term will end in May 2027. The amount of arrears will depend on the delay caused by the Eighth Pay Commission and the fitment factor. If the Commission uses a fitment factor of 2.1 and there is an 18-month delay in implementing the report, Level 6 employees could receive arrears of Rs 7 lakh. At a fitment factor of 2.28, Level 6 employees could receive arrears of Rs 1,087,488.

At a fitment factor of 2.57, the arrears are expected to be Rs 1,333,872. If the Commission uses a fitment factor of 2.15, Level 8 employees will receive arrears of Rs 1,313,760 for the 18-month period. At a fitment factor of 2.28, Level 8 employees will receive arrears of Rs 1,462,272. However, at a fitment factor of 2.57, they will receive arrears of Rs 1,793,568.
