A 14.2-kg cylinder will only hold 10 kg of gas! A 'Plan B' is being developed to address the LPG crisis

LPG Crisis: Disruptions in LPG supplies from Gulf countries have led to a domestic gas shortage in India. The government claims there is no shortage, but people are panicking. Companies are now considering providing consumers with less gas in their domestic cylinders.

The blockage of the Strait of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has severely affected India's oil and gas supply. Given the dwindling stock of LPG in the country, state-owned oil companies (OMCs) are now considering filling only 10 kilograms of gas in the 14.2 kilogram cylinder used in households. According to a report by Moneycontrol, the main objective of this strategy is to make the limited available gas available to as many families as possible.

According to company estimates, a 14.2-kilogram cylinder lasts for an average of 35–40 days. A 10-kilogram cylinder can last for about a month. The gas saved through this reduction will be used to meet the demand of households where cylinders are about to run out. If this plan is implemented, new stickers will be affixed to the cylinders and their prices will be reduced in proportion to their weight.

India meets approximately 60% of its LPG needs through imports. 90% of LPG supplies come from Gulf countries. Currently, escalating tensions between Iran and the United States have completely disrupted the supply chain. The situation of LPG shipments from Gulf countries remains extremely worrying. Last week, only two ships arrived carrying a total of 92,700 tons of LPG. This quantity is equivalent to India's consumption for just one day. Currently, six Indian-flagged LPG tankers are stranded in the Persian Gulf, awaiting re-opening. Donald Trump's warning to Iran has further exacerbated this crisis.

Daily consumption is 93,500 tonnes

India's daily LPG consumption is approximately 93,500 tons. Of this, 86%, or approximately 80,400 tons, is used by domestic consumers. Overall consumption fell by 17% in the first fortnight of March. Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Petroleum Ministry, described the situation as "worrying" and advised people to conserve gas. Although the government claims that domestic supplies are currently regular, there is panic among the public.
