In the 1930s, when India was engulfed in the flames of revolution and the struggle against British rule intensified, the film industry was also flourishing. It was during this period that a talented musician entered the world of cinema. Born and brought up in a brothel, the woman started learning music from a young age. Her beauty was commendable. She created her own unique creative artistic identity in cinema. This woman was none other than Jaddanbai. She was the mother of superstar Nargis and the maternal grandmother of Sanjay Dutt. She was born around 1892 in a small place near the then Banaras to Mia Jaan and Dalipabaai. When she was five years old, her father died.
Jaddanbai then moved to the city and became a singer under the guidance of Srimant Ganpat Rao (Bhaiya Saheb Scindia) of Calcutta. After his death, she trained under Ustad Moinuddin Khan and Ustad Laab Khan. Over time she became an even greater singer and courtesan than her mother. Jaddanbai, who was already a famous singer, entered cinema when she was approached for a role by the Play Art Photo Tone Company of Lahore. After acting in a few films, she then ventured into production and started her own company called Sangeet Films. She financed the 1935 film Talshe Haq and introduced her daughter Nargis as a child artiste. According to a BBC report, journalist Yasser Usman called
Jaddanbai 'India's first showwoman' because she was an all-rounder, acting, directing and producing her films, just like Raj Kapoor.
Talking about her personal life, Jaddanbai married three times. She fell in love with a rich Gujarati Hindu businessman Narottamdas Khatri, who converted to Islam after marriage. But they got divorced after a few years of marriage. She had a son from this marriage, whose name was Akhtar Hussain.
