Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah may have followed his workload plan to the letter during the ongoing Test series against England, but it seems the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is not entirely pleased. Despite Bumrah bowling according to the pre-decided schedule, a fresh report suggests the board is frustrated with how the team management and selectors have managed his availability.
Bumrah’s Controlled Workload
As per a report by Times of India, Bumrah was advised to bowl only 45 to 50 overs per Test match, to avoid aggravating past injuries—particularly the one he suffered during the Sydney Test vs Australia. Since then, his workload has been closely monitored. In the current series:
-
33 overs in the Manchester Test
-
43 overs at Lord’s
-
43.4 overs in Leeds
The plan has seemingly worked, as Bumrah remains fit heading into the fifth and final Test at the Kennington Oval, starting July 31.
BCCI’s Displeasure Despite the Plan
Surprisingly, despite everything going by the book, the BCCI is reportedly angry with the way Bumrah’s inclusion has been handled. The board feels that team management and selectors failed to take a long-term view and instead included Bumrah on a part-time basis for just three Tests.
A senior source quoted in the report said the BCCI is frustrated that Bumrah was “partially available” and believes such an arrangement causes confusion. The board reportedly prefers clarity—either a player is fully available for the whole series or is rested entirely.
Confusion Around 5th Test Availability
As the Oval Test approaches, uncertainty continues over whether Bumrah will play. India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed that all pacers are fit and available, but stopped short of revealing the final playing XI. If Bumrah is rested for the final match, it could intensify the board's dissatisfaction.
