Bentley Enters the Electric Era: New EV Packs 888 PS, 600 km Range and 0–100 km/h in Just 2.9 Seconds

Bentley has officially entered the electric-car era with its first fully electric SUV, the Torcal. The luxury British automaker has taken a clear approach with its first EV: embrace electric performance without giving up the styling, craftsmanship and road presence that have defined the Bentley brand for generations.

The new SUV arrives as luxury automakers continue to explore how to transition to electric vehicles without alienating traditional customers.

A Bentley that still looks like a Bentley

One of the biggest talking points of the Torcal is its design.

Rather than giving the SUV an entirely futuristic appearance, Bentley has retained several familiar styling elements from its petrol-powered models. Its distinctive diamond-shaped lighting elements and traditional-looking front design are intended to make the car immediately recognisable as a Bentley.

Interestingly, an electric vehicle doesn't need a conventional grille to cool an internal-combustion engine. Yet Bentley has retained elements of its signature design because the company believes customers shouldn't have to give up the visual identity of a luxury car simply because it has switched to electric power.

Bentley even gives the EV a performance-inspired sound

Bentley has also worked on the sensory experience of driving the Torcal.

The company has developed a specially designed sound system that creates a synthetic performance sound inspired by its V8-powered cars. The system incorporates orchestral elements, including timpani drums, with the sound becoming more pronounced as the vehicle accelerates.

The idea is to make the driving experience feel emotional and engaging rather than completely silent.

888 PS and 1,350 Nm of torque

The range-topping Torcal S is Bentley's most powerful production car yet.

Its dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup produces an impressive:

  • 888 PS of power

  • 1,350 Nm of torque

  • 0–100 km/h in 2.9 seconds

  • Top speed of 260 km/h

The standard version is also exceptionally powerful, producing 821 PS and 1,194 Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds.

For a large luxury SUV, those figures put the Torcal firmly in high-performance territory.

Up to 600 km of range

Power comes from a 113 kWh battery using 800V lithium-ion technology.

Bentley claims the SUV can travel up to 600 km on a full charge, giving it enough range for longer journeys.

Fast charging is another major feature. The Torcal supports charging speeds of up to 400 kW, with Bentley claiming that the battery can go from 10% to 80% in approximately 16 minutes under suitable charging conditions.

The company also says that just seven minutes of charging can add around 160 km of claimed range.

Bentley takes a different approach from Ferrari

Bentley's strategy comes at a time when luxury brands are debating how radically their electric cars should differ from their traditional models.

Some manufacturers have opted for futuristic designs, while Bentley has deliberately chosen continuity.

Bentley CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser has emphasised the idea of creating a Bentley first and an electric vehicle second. The philosophy is simple: customers shouldn't feel that choosing an EV means giving up the design language and identity associated with the brand.

Aiming to attract new Bentley customers

The Torcal is also intended to expand Bentley's customer base.

The company says it has received strong interest from markets including Europe, the Middle East and the United States. A marketing campaign in China is also planned.

Interestingly, Bentley expects the SUV to appeal not only to existing owners but also to people who have never owned a Bentley before. The company says a significant share of potential buyers are first-time Bentley customers.

£350 million investment in UK production

Bentley is investing £350 million in its Crewe manufacturing facility in the UK to produce the new electric SUV.

The investment comes as Britain's automotive industry undergoes a major transition towards electrification, with several manufacturers announcing large-scale investments in domestic production.

The Torcal therefore represents more than just a new model for Bentley—it is also an important investment in the company's future manufacturing strategy.

Bentley changes its electric-car roadmap

Bentley had previously planned to launch its first EV in 2026 and eventually become a fully electric brand by 2030.

However, the company later reconsidered its strategy after determining that some of its customers were not yet ready to move entirely to electric vehicles.

The Torcal represents a more gradual approach. Rather than abandoning its traditional luxury-car identity, Bentley is attempting to combine that heritage with electric performance.

The bottom line

With 888 PS, 1,350 Nm of torque, a claimed 600 km range and 400 kW fast charging, Bentley's first electric SUV is clearly focused on performance as much as luxury.

But the most important part of the Torcal may be its philosophy. Bentley isn't trying to make an EV that looks like a completely different car. Instead, it wants customers to experience electric power while still feeling that they're driving a Bentley.

If the strategy succeeds, the Torcal could become an important step in bringing Bentley's traditional customer base into the electric era.
