In today's era of digital and online shopping, we all frequently use courier or delivery services. As easy as it is to order goods from home, cyber criminals have turned it into a dangerous weapon to defraud people. These days, cases of courier fraud are increasing rapidly across the country, with cunning fraudsters intimidating people and stealing their hard-earned money.
If you've ever received a call or message like this, this news is extremely important for you. Let's learn how this scam works and how to avoid it.
How does courier fraud work?
Fake call or message: You receive a call or message from an unknown number claiming to be from FedEx, DHL, or another reputable courier company.
Fear of illegal goods: Scammers tell you that a parcel was sent in your name and was seized by customs or the police. The parcel contains drugs, illegal passports, SIM cards, or other prohibited items.
Fear of Mumbai or Narcotics Police: The call is then transferred to an officer allegedly from the Mumbai Police or Narcotics Department. They appear on video call in police uniforms, intimidating you, and then digitally arrest you.
Demands for money: They pressure you to transfer money online to your bank account to settle the case and remove your name from the case. Fearful individuals end up losing all their savings.
Important precautions to avoid this type of fraud:
Don't panic: No courier company, police, or customs department ever makes such inquiries over phone or video calls, nor does it demand money online. The first thing you should do when you receive such a call is remain calm.
Do not share personal details: Do not share your Aadhaar card, PAN card, bank account details or OTP with any unknown caller.
Don't click on links or apps: Don't click on APK files or links sent by unknown people, or download any remote access apps (like AnyDesk, TeamViewer) to your phone.
Cross-check with the courier company : If you really doubt a courier, then go to the website of the respective official courier company and check its tracking number yourself.
What to do if you become a victim of fraud?
If you unwittingly fall victim to this fraud or are the victim of financial fraud, take these steps immediately without wasting a second:
Call the cyber helpline 1930: Immediately after the incident, call the national cybercrime helpline number 1930. The sooner you report, the better your chances of getting your money back.

Inform the bank: Contact your bank and get your account and card blocked immediately.
