In a major breakthrough, the mastermind behind the Chandan Mishra murder case, Tausif Khan alias Badshah, was arrested in Kolkata with the help of the Automated Number Plate Reading (ANPR) system. The accused, who had cleverly altered his appearance to mislead the police, was tracked and caught after a cross-state operation involving high-tech surveillance.
Chandan Mishra Murder at Paras Hospital
Chandan Mishra, a known criminal from Buxar, was shot dead inside Paras Hospital in Patna, Bihar. Following the murder, the prime accused Tausif and his associates fled the scene. CCTV footage of the incident helped police identify the suspects.
Tausif Tried to Mislead Police
To evade arrest, Tausif cut his hair and altered his appearance using an online service. He then fled to Kolkata, assuming the change would make him unrecognizable. Kolkata Police ACP (STF) Solomon V. Nesakumar confirmed that when they arrested him, his appearance was entirely different.
Bihar Police Alerted Neighbouring States
Once the murder footage was examined, Bihar Police shared the suspect’s photos with neighboring states. A key lead came from a woman arrested in Bihar, who revealed that Tausif and three others were headed to Kolkata in a specific vehicle.
ANPR and Toll Plaza Data Traced the Vehicle
The West Bengal STF, led by IG Gaurav Sharma, began tracking the vehicle using FastTag and toll plaza data. The car was tracked passing through Jharkhand, eventually reaching Dankuni, West Bengal, around 10:30 pm on July 17.
Role of ANPR System in the Arrest
The operation’s success heavily relied on the ANPR system, a high-tech camera setup that captures clear images of vehicle number plates and uses algorithms to identify and track them. This enabled law enforcement to trace the suspect’s exact movements.
Arrest and Further Investigation
With Tausif’s presence in Kolkata confirmed, the Kolkata Police and Bengal STF went on high alert. By July 18 morning, teams had surrounded the area, anticipating his attempt to escape. He was eventually arrested from a guesthouse in Kolkata.
Police sources also identified the others involved:
-
Balwant and Raviranjan were the shooters who executed the murder.
-
Abhishek drove the motorcycle used for their escape from the hospital.
