Ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly Elections, the Election Commission has taken a significant step to address concerns surrounding the voter list revision process. Amid rising political allegations and public outcry over errors and removals from the electoral rolls, the Commission has clarified that no voter's name will be deleted without prior notice and due opportunity.

Notice Before Deletion

The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced that before removing any name from the voter list, a notice will be issued to the concerned voter. This will allow individuals to submit valid documents in support of their eligibility. Importantly, the Commission also stated that no names will be removed in the format scheduled for publication on August 1 without this process.

Voters Can Submit Documents

Voters who receive the notice can present the required documents or file the necessary forms. Those who submit the “counting form” will have their names included in the draft voter list.

Allegations of BLO Negligence

However, concerns continue regarding the role of Booth Level Officers (BLOs). Reports from several areas reveal that many BLOs are not conducting proper home visits, filling out forms without consent, and in some cases, verifying voters through thumb impressions or documents viewed only on mobile phones. In response, strict action has been taken — with over 100 BLOs penalized, including 35 in the Paliganj constituency of Patna alone.

Fake Voters in Border Areas

The latest revision has also uncovered a serious issue — names of citizens from Bangladesh and Nepal allegedly appearing on voter lists in border districts. This has led to political tension and calls for accountability. The Election Commission has ordered an investigation and assured that all ineligible or fake voters will be removed.
