In preparation for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a new strategy aimed at penetrating the Samajwadi Party's (SP) core Muslim vote base. The BJP is using the upcoming Panchayat elections, scheduled for next year, as an opportunity to build support in Muslim-majority areas where it has historically struggled.

The party has directed its Minority Front to identify villages across UP where Muslims have traditionally won positions such as Gram Pradhan and BDC (Block Development Council) member. BJP plans to back Muslim candidates in these areas, hoping to cultivate local leadership that aligns with the party’s ideology.

There are around 57,695 Gram Panchayats in Uttar Pradesh, and approximately 7,000 of them are led by Muslim Pradhans. Over 8,000 BDC members are also from the Muslim community. The BJP believes that supporting such candidates in Muslim-majority regions could help establish its political roots at the grassroots level, which would benefit the party in the 2027 elections.

The move follows setbacks in the 2022 Assembly and 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where Muslim voters overwhelmingly supported the SP, with vote shares exceeding 80 percent in some regions. Previous BJP initiatives, including outreach to Shia, Sufi, and Pasmanda Muslims, failed to yield desired political results. The party has now shifted its focus to direct involvement in local politics by helping Muslim candidates win key positions in village-level governance.

The BJP is also working to connect these candidates with local party MLAs, MPs, and former legislators. By doing so, it aims to provide them access to administrative support, developmental schemes, and local-level influence from the tehsil to the police station. In return, these leaders would be expected to support the party’s efforts during state and national elections by helping mobilize voters and managing booth-level operations.

According to UP BJP Minority Front State President Kunwar Basit Ali, the effort is also aimed at engaging with those sections of the Muslim community that have been politically sidelined since the weakening of the BSP. The Minority Front is focusing on identifying Muslims who resonate with BJP’s ideology and can serve as viable candidates in the Panchayat elections.

While Panchayat elections are not fought on party symbols, political parties play a strong behind-the-scenes role in fielding and supporting candidates. The BJP hopes that by assisting Muslim candidates now, it can build lasting political relationships that translate into votes in 2027. Whether this strategy will help the BJP make a dent in the SP’s loyal Muslim vote bank remains to be seen.
