Tensions seem to be rising in the US-Brazil relations. US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a 50% tariff on all imports from Brazil through a social media post. While this move is going to increase trade tensions on one hand, on the other hand, it is also being seen as Trump's displeasure against the ongoing lawsuits against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a 50 percent tariff on all Brazilian products from August 1, and called the lawsuit against former President Jair Bolsonaro a 'witch hunt' and an 'international disgrace'.

After this decision by the US, President Lula da Silva became angry. He has clearly said that we will not bow down to any external pressure, and has also threatened reciprocal tariffs.
Donald Trump claimed that Brazil is maintaining a 'very unfair trade relationship' with the US and also accused it of 'constant attacks' against US companies in digital trade. He said, 'We will no longer tolerate one-sided trade and political persecution against our friends.' Trump wrote in a letter to the President of Brazil, 'I knew and worked with former President Jair Bolsonaro, and respected him very much, as did the leaders of most other countries. Brazil has treated former President Bolsonaro, who was a highly respected leader around the world, even in America, during his tenure. The way he has been treated is a stigma internationally. This trial should not happen.'
Brazilian President Lula Silva gave a befitting reply to Trump's threat and posted on X, 'Brazil is a sovereign country whose institutions are independent. We do not accept any external pressure or threat.' He stressed that the trial related to the coup plot against Jair Bolsonaro is completely under the judicial system of Brazil, and there is no scope for any external interference in it.
Lula also said clearly about the US objection on digital platforms that there is no place for hate, racism, child pornography, and anti-human rights speech in the digital space in Brazil. He said, 'Aggression or violence is not allowed in our definition of freedom. Every national or foreign company working here will have to follow the laws of Brazil.'
America benefited - Donald Trump.
The Lula government called Trump's allegations of trade deficit 'false' and cited the data of the US government itself. According to these figures, in the last 15 years, the US has earned a total surplus of $410 billion in the trade of textiles and services with Brazil. He warned that 'if the US unilaterally increases trade taxes, Brazil will respond against it under the 'Economic Reciprocity Law'.'
