Credit Card: Indians' credit card spending exceeds 2 lakh crores! Find out which bank's card is leading the way?

If you use a credit card for shopping, online payments, or other needs, these figures from the Reserve Bank of India may surprise you. Credit card spending is steadily increasing across the country. Total credit card spending in July 2026 was approximately ₹2.08 lakh crore, an increase from July last year.
Significantly, card spending has remained above ₹2 lakh crore for the third consecutive month. These figures clearly indicate that people are using credit cards more than ever for payments and purchases. So, let's find out which bank's card accounts for the highest spending.
How much has credit card spending increased?
From January to December 2025, an average of around Rs 1.93 lakh crore was spent on credit cards every month.
From January to July 2026, an average of about Rs 2 lakh crore was spent every month.
The total number of credit cards in the country reached approximately 122.9 million in July 2026. This number was approximately 121.6 million in June 2026.
In July 2025, there were about 11.16 crore credit cards in the country.
This means that along with the increase in credit card spending in a year, the number of cards has also increased significantly.
Which bank's card was used for the highest spending?
According to RBI data, if we look at the performance of banks, large private banks have been at the forefront in terms of credit card spending:
1. HDFC Bank: Around Rs 60,217.54 crore was spent on this card in July, which is 11.93% more than last year.
2. ICICI Bank: Card spends of this bank declined by 5.9% on an annual basis and stood at around Rs 34,025.27 crore.
3. Axis Bank: Its credit card spends stood at around Rs 23,824.7 crore, up 4.6% year-on-year.
4. SBI Cards: Spending in July was around Rs 39,591.76 crore, up 21.6% year-on-year.
The total credit card expenditure of public sector banks till July was around Rs 46,000 crore.
Could credit card spending increase further?
According to experts, credit card spending, which exceeds ₹2 lakh crore per month across the country, is now expected to become a common trend. Especially with the festive season approaching in the coming months, people are expected to spend more on credit cards. Consequently, overall spending is expected to increase due to increased card usage for shopping, travel, and other necessities.
