Cricket is all set to make a historic return to the Olympic Games in the Los Angeles 2028 edition, marking its comeback after 128 years. The sport was last seen at the Olympics in the year 1900. Now, it will feature once again at the global stage, and the official schedule has been released by the organizers.
The cricket competition will be held at the Fairgrounds Stadium in the city of Pamona, which is located about 50 kilometers from Los Angeles. The tournament will begin on July 12, 2028. The gold medal match for women’s cricket will take place on July 20, while the men’s gold medal match will be played on July 29.
In both men's and women’s categories, six teams each will participate. A total of 180 cricketers are expected to be involved. The format will include two matches being played each day, ensuring a packed and exciting schedule. The growing popularity of cricket in the United States played a major role in its inclusion, especially after the successful hosting of multiple matches in the 2024 T20 World Cup across venues in Grand Prairie, Lauderhill, and New York.
The International Olympic Committee has also approved the inclusion of several other sports for LA 2028, including baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes), and squash.
Team India is likely to take part in the Olympics. India recently won gold at the Asian Games under the captaincy of Ruturaj Gaikwad, and a similar goal will surely be in sight at the Olympics. Strong teams like Australia and England are also expected to participate.
Cricket has only been played once before at the Olympics. That was in 1900, when Great Britain and France were the only two participating nations. The match was played over two days with 12 players per team. Great Britain won by 158 runs. Interestingly, it is said that if the French team had survived just five more minutes, the match would have ended in a draw.
