Yash Chopra’s 1997 classic Dil To Pagal Hai remains one of Bollywood’s most iconic romantic films, remembered for its emotional storytelling and the popular trio of Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, and Karisma Kapoor. Karisma’s performance as “Nisha” was widely appreciated and even earned her a National Award for Best Supporting Actress. However, the role was not originally written for her.
According to Karisma Kapoor’s recent interview, she revealed that she was not the first choice for the character. Before her, the makers had reportedly approached Kajol and Manisha Koirala, both of whom declined the offer.
The reason behind their refusal, as Karisma explained, was linked to the film’s casting dynamics. With Madhuri Dixit already playing a major role in the film, it is believed that some actresses were hesitant to take on a part that involved strong competition and dance face-offs with her, which may have influenced their decision to turn it down.
Karisma shared that the role of Nisha was offered to multiple actresses before it came to her. Eventually, when she accepted it, she saw it as a challenging opportunity because the character was not a typical romantic heroine. Nisha’s role was emotionally complex, as she was not the one the hero ends up with, which made it both unconventional and demanding at the time.
She also reflected that the character marked a shift in how female roles were perceived in mainstream cinema, as it required depth, vulnerability, and strength rather than just being a conventional lead.
Today, Dil To Pagal Hai is still celebrated for its music, choreography, and performances, with Karisma Kapoor’s portrayal of Nisha remaining one of the most memorable highlights of the film.
