Genetic Risk of Diabetes: Is the story of diabetes running in your family for generations? If both your parents have type 2 diabetes, then it is not just a coincidence, but can be a warning. In such cases, you should take your lifestyle, diet and fitness seriously, otherwise this disease can silently make you its victim. Let us know why this happens and how it can be avoided.
On this issue, Dr. Hiran S. Reddy, diabetologist at Gleneagles Hospital, Hyderabad, explains that in such a case, a person can inherit insulin resistance or beta-cell disorder, due to which the body is unable to control blood sugar properly. If both parents have diabetes, then the chances of getting this disease at some point in your life are more than 50%.
Fasting blood sugar levels may increase.
Its symptoms may not be visible in youth, but with time, the fasting blood sugar level starts increasing or glucose tolerance becomes weak. This does not mean that if your parents have diabetes, then you will also definitely have it, but it would not be right to take the risk lightly. It is always said that genetic diseases can happen to you, too. But if changes are made in the lifestyle, then this dangerous disease can be avoided.
Diabetes is preventable
It is completely possible to avoid type 2 diabetes if you take the necessary steps at the right time. According to Dr. Hiran, if you just keep your weight under control, the risk of diabetes can be reduced to a great extent. Apart from this, your diet should be balanced, give priority to vegetables, whole grains, pulses, eggs and healthy fats like nuts, olive oil. Also, it is important to stay away from sweet and processed food.
Regular check-ups are very important.
If you are over 25 years of age or you are suffering from obesity, fatigue or lethargy, then get a blood sugar test and health checkup done at least once a year. This can give early indications, which can prevent diabetes in the future.
