FIFA World Cup 2026: 64 teams could play in the FIFA World Cup 2030; it will be a historic edition

As the FIFA World Cup nears its final stages, the governing body of football has stated that it will consider a proposal to increase the number of teams in the 2030 Men's World Cup to 64. However, a final decision on this will be made after the 2026 FIFA World Cup concludes.

This information was provided by FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Speaking to Swiss media outlet BlueWin, Infantino defended FIFA's policy of continued expansion. He said, "The new 48-team format at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America has proven to be 100 percent successful. Given this success, a proposal to increase the number of teams to 64 for the 2030 World Cup will also be discussed."

The 2030 World Cup is already set to be historic as it will be hosted in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, while the tournament's opening matches will be played in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.
