Shubman Gill may be known primarily for his batting, but the Indian captain once again showed that he can make a difference in the field as well.
During the Galle Test, Gill produced a spectacular catch that left teammates, fans and viewers stunned. The dismissal was so impressive that watching it from different camera angles only makes the catch look even more extraordinary.
Gill Pulls Off a One-Handed Stunner
The incredible moment came during Sri Lanka's first innings in the 17th over.
Kuldeep Yadav was bowling, with Kamindu Mendis facing him. Mendis attempted to play the delivery with a drive, but the ball flew quickly towards the left side of Gill.
Gill reacted instantly.
The Indian captain threw himself to his left and managed to grab the ball with one hand before it could hit the ground. It was a superb combination of anticipation, athleticism and sharp reflexes.
Kuldeep Yadav Gets His First Wicket
Gill's stunning effort also gave India an important breakthrough.
Kamindu Mendis was dismissed for 14 runs, giving Kuldeep Yadav his first wicket of the innings. The dismissal came when Sri Lanka's score was 59, adding further pressure on the hosts.
What made the moment even more memorable was the manner of the dismissal. Instead of a routine catch, Gill had to dive across and stretch out one hand to complete the grab.
Gill Makes a Difference With Both Bat and Gloves
The catch was another reminder that Gill's contribution to the Indian team is not limited to his batting.
As captain, he has the responsibility of making tactical decisions, but moments like this show the athleticism he can bring to the field as well.
For Kuldeep, the wicket provided an important breakthrough, while for India, Gill's spectacular catch removed a dangerous-looking batter and gave the visitors another reason to celebrate.
It was the kind of catch that hardly needs a replay—although, after seeing it once, fans will probably want to watch it again from every possible camera angle.
