Germany Knocked Out of FIFA World Cup: The biggest upset of the FIFA World Cup 2026 occurred in the Round of 32. Paraguay defeated four-time champions Germany 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a close 1-1 draw and knocked them out of the tournament.

Four-time champions Germany have been eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The European giants suffered a shocking 4-3 penalty shootout defeat against Paraguay in the Round of 32. The match, played on Tuesday according to Indian time, had the score tied at 1-1 after extra time. In the penalty shootout, Kai Havertz, Nick Woltemade and Jonathan Tah failed to convert their shots. Antonio Sanabria and Fabian Balbuena missed their penalties for Paraguay, but Jose Canale scored the decisive penalty in sudden death to give Paraguay its first World Cup knockout win in history.

Before their defeat to Paraguay, Germany had never lost a penalty shootout at the FIFA World Cup. This impressive record was broken at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. This victory over Germany also marked Paraguay's second World Cup victory via penalty shootout. Previously, Paraguay defeated Japan on penalties in the Round of 16 of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In the match played at Boston Stadium, Paraguay took the lead in the 42nd minute and led 1-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Germany equalized with a header from Kai Havertz in the 54th minute. Subsequently, no goals were scored in regulation time or 30 minutes of extra time. During extra time, a goal by Jonathan Tah was disallowed for a foul after a VAR check. Before the penalty shootout, Germany seemed to have the advantage on paper, especially with the presence of veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer at the goalpost. Early in the shootout, Havertz missed the first penalty, followed by Nick Woltemade on the fourth attempt and Tah on the sixth and final attempt. Paraguay capitalized on this.

José Canales scored the winning penalty for Paraguay. This marked the first time Germany lost a penalty shootout in World Cup history. Paraguay won a penalty shootout in just their second attempt. This result is considered the fourth biggest upset in the knockout stage since FIFA rankings began in 1992. Paraguay's current FIFA rankings are 41st, while Germany are 10th. There is a 31-place difference between the two teams.
