The Garuda Purana is considered one of the eighteen great Puranas of Hinduism. This book not only explains life and death, the journey of the soul, heaven and hell, and the consequences of karma, but also provides detailed guidance on the principles one should follow in everyday life. Although many people associate the Garuda Purana only with post-death rituals, the book contains many teachings essential for a happy, prosperous, and balanced life. According to religious beliefs, certain bad habits can hinder a person's happiness, peace, and financial progress in life. Therefore, it is considered important to change such habits in time.
The Acharkanda of the Garuda Purana describes certain habits that are religiously considered to diminish the well-being of a home. First, it mentions the habit of sleeping late, even after sunrise. From a religious perspective, the morning Brahma Muhurta and sunrise symbolize energy, positivity, and a new beginning. It is believed that a person who regularly wakes up late becomes lazy, loses focus on work, and may miss opportunities for advancement. Therefore, it is advisable to start the day early and maintain a regular routine.
Another important habit is disrespecting or wasting food. In Indian culture, food is considered a form of 'Annapurna' and every morsel is considered a blessing from God. Therefore, growing excess food, throwing it away, or not respecting it is considered inauspicious. According to religious beliefs, prosperity does not reside in a home where food is wasted. Therefore, eating only what is needed, respecting food, and, if possible, giving leftover food to the needy are considered good life values.
The third habit is neglecting cleanliness. According to the Garuda Purana, cleanliness of the body, clothes, and home is considered important not only for health but also for mental and spiritual well-being. It is believed that using the same clothes for several days, allowing dirt to accumulate in the home, or leaving clutter around creates a negative environment. Maintaining cleanliness keeps the mind happy, promotes good health, and increases positive energy. Therefore, this teaching emphasizes that keeping the home and surroundings clean is everyone's responsibility.
The fourth habit is harboring hatred, anger, or bitterness toward others. Constant quarreling, shouting, jealousy, and hostility destroy the peace of the home and increase tension among family members. From a religious perspective, happiness and prosperity cannot exist in such an environment. Instead, if love, cooperation, forgiveness, and mutual respect are adopted, the home atmosphere will remain pleasant. This teaching shows that positive thinking and friendly behavior are essential not only for spiritual but also for social life.
