Google Discover Gets an AI Upgrade: You Can Now Tell Google What You Want to See

Google is making its Discover feed more personalized with a new AI-powered feature that gives users greater control over the stories and topics they see. Instead of relying only on Google's understanding of your activity, you can now describe your interests in your own words and let an AI chatbot adjust your Discover feed accordingly.
The feature is being rolled out through the Google app and could make Discover more useful for people who frequently find that their feed contains stories they are not interested in.
How Does the New AI Feature Work?
Google Discover already recommends articles based on factors such as your activity and interests. The new feature adds a more direct way to customize those recommendations.
Users can access the new option through the three-dot menu in the Discover feed. An AI chatbot then allows them to describe the subjects they want to see more often.
For example, you could tell Google that you are interested in smartphone launches, electric cars, cricket or technology tips. The AI can interpret those preferences and adjust the content shown in your feed.
You Can Fine-Tune Your Recommendations
The feature isn't simply about selecting a few fixed categories.
Google's AI can understand preferences expressed in natural language, allowing users to be more specific about what they want. After describing your interests, the system confirms the preferences and uses them to influence future recommendations.
Users can also refine their choices if their feed doesn't match what they expected.
Why Is This Useful?
One of the biggest problems with algorithm-based feeds is that they can sometimes become repetitive or show content that isn't particularly relevant.
The new AI approach gives users a more conversational way to explain what they actually want.
Instead of searching through multiple settings, you can simply describe your preferences and let Google's AI interpret them.
Discover Isn't the Only Google Service Getting an AI Update
Google is also making changes to its Google News app on Android, including personalized daily audio briefings.
Another new feature called Preferred Sources allows users to follow publishers more easily. The feature can influence which sources appear in Search, AI Overviews and AI Mode.
These changes show that Google is increasingly using AI not only to generate answers but also to personalize the information users receive.
Your Feed Could Become More Relevant
The new Discover customization feature could be particularly useful for people with very specific interests.
For example, rather than simply selecting "technology," users could describe a preference for Android updates, smartphone launches, AI tools and cybersecurity news. The AI can then use that description to refine recommendations.
The system is designed to give users more control while still allowing Google's recommendation engine to do the heavy lifting.
How to Try the New Feature
The feature is being rolled out through the Google app, so it may not appear on every device immediately.
If it is available on your account:
-
Open the Google app.
-
Go to your Discover feed.
-
Look for the new personalization option in the three-dot menu.
-
Describe the topics and types of content you want to see.
-
Review and refine your preferences if necessary.
Google is gradually making AI a more integrated part of everyday search and content discovery. With this update, users can move from simply receiving recommendations to actively telling Google what kind of information they want in their feed.
