There is an important government scholarship opportunity for meritorious students from economically weaker families. The Ministry of Education has extended the application deadline for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) for the academic year 2026-27.

Eligible students can receive a scholarship of ₹12,000 per year, with the amount transferred directly to their bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer system.

The application deadline has now been extended to September 30, 2026.

What is the NMMSS scholarship?

The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme is a central government scholarship programme designed to help meritorious students from economically weaker sections continue their education after Class VIII.

Under the scheme, one lakh fresh scholarships are awarded every year to eligible Class IX students who qualify through the selection process conducted by their respective State or Union Territory.

The scholarship can continue from Class X to Class XII through the renewal process, subject to the applicable academic requirements.

How much scholarship does a student receive?

Selected students receive ₹12,000 per year.

The money is transferred electronically to the student's bank account through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS) under the DBT mechanism.

This means eligible families do not have to depend on cash payments or collect the scholarship physically from an office.

Who is eligible?

The scheme is specifically meant for students from economically weaker families who meet the prescribed academic and other conditions.

According to the Ministry of Education, key eligibility conditions include:

• The student's parental income should not exceed ₹3.50 lakh per year.

• The student must generally have secured at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade in Class VII to appear for the scholarship selection test.

• The minimum marks requirement is relaxed by 5 percentage points for SC and ST students.

• The student must be studying in a State Government, Government-aided or local-body school.

• The student must qualify through the selection examination conducted by the concerned State or UT.

How long can students receive the benefit?

The scholarship is initially awarded to eligible students entering Class IX.

It can subsequently be renewed for Classes X, XI and XII, provided the student satisfies the applicable academic and renewal conditions.

This makes the scheme particularly useful for families looking to reduce the financial burden of continuing school education through the higher secondary level.

Apply through the National Scholarship Portal

Applications are being processed through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP), the government's central platform for scholarship schemes.

For 2026-27, selected students are required to complete One-Time Registration (OTR) on the portal and then submit their application for the scholarship scheme.

The application deadline has been extended to September 30, 2026.

Verification is also important

Submitting the application is not the final step.

After submission, applications go through two levels of verification:

• Level 1: Verification by the Institute Nodal Officer (INO)

• Level 2: Verification by the District Nodal Officer (DNO)

For the 2026-27 cycle, the deadline for Level 1 verification is October 15, while Level 2 verification must be completed by October 31, 2026.

What should parents and students do now?

Eligible students should avoid waiting until the final day. Parents should first check the eligibility conditions and ensure that the student's OTR and scholarship application are completed correctly on the National Scholarship Portal.

Students who have already submitted their applications should also check whether their application has been properly verified by the concerned authorities.

With the September 30 application deadline approaching, eligible families should complete the process in time rather than risk missing the scholarship opportunity.
