While many big-budget Bollywood films failed to make a mark this year, small regional films continue to surprise audiences and trade analysts alike. One such example is the Gujarati supernatural thriller ‘Vash Level 2’, starring Janaki Bodiwala, Hiten Kumar, and Hetu Kanodia.
A massive success story
Made on a modest budget of ₹8 crore, Vash Level 2 has already earned more than ₹16 crore at the box office, proving to be one of the biggest Gujarati hits of the year. But the success didn’t stop there — the film recently made history by sealing a record-breaking OTT deal.
Netflix deal sets a new benchmark
Netflix has reportedly acquired the digital streaming rights for Vash Level 2 and its Hindi-dubbed version for a whopping ₹3.5 crore — the highest amount ever paid for a Gujarati film by any OTT platform. The film officially premiered on Netflix on October 22, with both Gujarati and Hindi versions available for viewers.
According to reports, the Netflix deal will run for three and a half years, with exclusive streaming rights for both versions during the first year.
Why Netflix paid such a high price
The film’s content-driven narrative, strong performances, and positive word of mouth helped it gain national attention. The Hindi version, in particular, has received excellent viewership numbers.
The first film in the series, Vash (2023), was a major success and even inspired Ajay Devgn’s Bollywood remake “Shaitaan”, which also starred Janaki Bodiwala alongside R. Madhavan.
Awards and recognition
The original Vash won the Best Gujarati Feature Film award at the 71st National Film Awards, and Janaki Bodiwala took home the Best Supporting Actress Award for her role in Shaitaan.
