How many days should a normal period last? Get the answer from a gynecologist

How long should a normal period last? Is it okay to have periods for 1-2 days or to bleed for more than a week? If you have these questions, let's get answers from your doctor.

It's crucial for every girl to have her period on time. If your periods are irregular, or if you experience severe pain or excessive blood flow, this isn't good. While girls often understand that regular periods are important, they often don't know exactly how long a period should last. This is why many girls consider a two-day period normal, while others experience an 8-9-day flow and believe this is normal. This raises the question: how long should a normal period last, and what should the flow be like? Let's learn the answers from an expert. Dr. Sonu Khokhar, MBBS, Health and Wellness Expert, explains this.

How many days should a normal period last?

  • Experts say that bleeding for 3-7 days during a period is generally considered normal. If a woman is bleeding for 5 days during her period, it means her period cycle is normal.
  • Bleeding for 1-2 days during your period is not entirely normal. Women often consider this normal, but a period that lasts for 1 or 2 days can be a sign of something going on in your body.
  • Bleeding should be heavy for the first 1-2 days of your period, gradually decrease for 3-5 days, and there should be light spotting or brown discharge for 6-7 days.
  • If your periods last less than 2 days or more than 8 days, there could be several problems with your body. In such cases, it's important to consult a doctor. In fact, periods aren't just a sign of fertility, but also reflect hormonal balance.
  • It's important for every woman to understand the math behind her cycle. The length of your period depends on your menstrual cycle. A healthy cycle can range from 21 to 35 days. For example, if you get your period every 28 days and it lasts for 5 days, this is completely normal.
  • If you are bleeding for more than 7-8 days, or the bleeding is very heavy and you have to change the pad every 1-2 hours, then definitely consult a doctor.
