Huma Qureshi is all set to dazzle audiences in Rajkummar Rao’s upcoming gangster drama Maalik, directed by Pulkit. Known for her powerful performances in series like Maharani and Delhi Crime, Huma is now embracing a new avatar — that of a glamorous dancer in the film’s track “Mehfil Mein Mallika Ka Swagat.” Her first look from the song was recently revealed, showcasing a bold and dazzling side of the actress.
Sharing her excitement with Mid-Day, Huma said she was drawn to the song because of her love for Indian cinema’s vibrant musical numbers. “I love tamasha! I love Indian films that have such songs. I grew up dancing to the ‘Bidi’ song from Omkara (2006), so this felt like a perfect fit to express another side of who I am,” she said.
Though known more for her serious and critically acclaimed roles, Huma is keen to break stereotypes. “People ask me whether doing dance numbers weakens my image, but I don’t believe in boxing myself. Just because I can headline shows like Maharani or Delhi Crimes, doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy a dance number too. No one can decide what I can or cannot do,” she asserted.
Huma also reflected on the evolving perception of item numbers. According to her, such songs are no longer designed for the male gaze but are now about celebrating feminine expression and empowerment. “We’re in 2025. Women now understand the intent behind such songs. Today, it’s about owning your sensuality and strength — and that’s something worth celebrating,” she said.
Set against the gritty backdrop of a gangster narrative, Maalik brings together two powerhouses — Rajkummar Rao and Huma Qureshi — and promises an intense story layered with music, action, and emotion. The film is already generating buzz, and Huma’s new look is only adding to the excitement.
