Renowned for his velvety voice and timeless ghazals, Pankaj was a beloved figure in Indian music. But amidst his illustrious career, one unforgettable concert moment stood out — when he was forced to sing a song at gunpoint.

A Demand That Wouldn’t Wait

During a live open-air concert about 25 years ago, Pankaj had already performed a few ghazals when an organizer repeatedly insisted that he sing a particular song immediately. The singer, valuing his artistic freedom and mood, refused politely, saying,

“I am not anyone’s slave that if someone tells me to sing right now, I will sing right now.”

The Gun That Changed Everything

Despite his refusal, the organizer returned and whispered that the ‘saheb’ in front had a special request. When Pankaj looked toward the man, he noticed something unusual — the man pulled out a revolver from his pocket and pointed it at him. Faced with this shocking threat, Pankaj had no choice but to comply.

Recalling the incident on a comedy show hosted by Kapil Sharma, Pankaj shared the story with a mix of disbelief and humor, laughing as he remembered the surreal experience.
