We often think of kidney disease as limited to physical function, but a new study has made a startling discovery. According to the research, chronic kidney disease can seriously impact not only the body but also our intellectual capacity.
The deep connection between the kidneys and the brain
This research, published in The Journal of the American Medical Association Network Open, found that as chronic kidney disease progresses, a person's intellectual capacity declines. Researchers found that people with this disease have difficulty concentrating on tasks and their work speed also slows down. In fact, in chronic kidney disease, the kidneys are unable to purify the blood properly for a long time, which has a negative impact on the brain.
Research conducted on thousands of people
For this important study, researchers from Tulane University and other institutions in the US conducted a comprehensive investigation. It included more than 5,600 participants aged 21 to 79. The researchers analyzed blood and urine samples and assessed their intellectual functioning over six consecutive years.
High blood pressure becomes a major reason
The research team also identified physiological processes that link kidney disease to brain dysfunction. The study suggests that chronic kidney disease can increase a patient's blood pressure. This increased blood pressure and disease progression increase patients' risk of intellectual impairment.
Increased risk of dementia
This study provides another serious warning. Evidence suggests that people with long-term kidney problems are more likely to develop dementia than the general population. This makes it clear that kidney health is directly linked to brain health.
