Pakistan’s Supreme Court has granted bail to former Prime Minister Imran Khan in eight cases simultaneously, including the high-profile May 9 case, where his supporters clashed directly with the army. The verdict, delivered on Thursday (21 August), is being seen as a major political development.
Supreme Court’s Strong Remarks
While hearing the case, Chief Justice Yahya Afridi made sharp observations against government and army lawyers who opposed Imran’s bail. The court said, “We do not want to make any comments on merits, as it may directly affect the case, but Imran Khan deserves bail.”
The bench added that Khan had “nothing to hide” and therefore should not be denied bail.
Why May 9 Case Matters
On May 9, 2023, violent protests erupted across Pakistan after Imran’s arrest, targeting military installations and government buildings. It was considered an unprecedented show of defiance against the army, making the case one of the most crucial legal battles for Khan.
Will Imran Khan Walk Free?
Although Khan has secured bail in the May 9 case, he still faces multiple charges, including the Toshakhana corruption case, where he has already been sentenced. His legal team has challenged the conviction in the High Court. Analysts say the May 9 bail is significant, but Khan’s release will depend on how quickly his lawyers secure relief in the other cases.
Currently, the PTI chief has been lodged in Adiala Jail for nearly two years.
Political Implications
The timing of the bail has fueled speculation of a political shift. Recently, Imran Khan formed an alliance with three opposition parties, appointing Mahmood Khan Achakzai, a Balochistan leader from the Pashtun Party, as the opposition leader. He also won support from Fazal ur Rehman’s JUI-F.
The Supreme Court’s decision, seen as going against the army’s stance, is being interpreted as a setback for the military establishment and a possible opening for Imran Khan to stage a political comeback.
