IND vs SA: KL Rahul reveals key decisions on playing XI, speaks on Rishabh Pant and Ruturaj Gaikwad

With the Test series wrapped up, the focus now shifts to the India–South Africa ODI series. The format has changed, and so have the squad dynamics. Senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have returned, along with a few other additions. However, the biggest development is in leadership. With Shubman Gill ruled out due to injury, KL Rahul will captain the series, and ahead of the first ODI, he made some important statements about the team combination.

KL Rahul confirms his batting position
The first ODI will be played in Ranchi on Sunday, November 30. A day before the match, Rahul addressed the media for the first time as captain. During the press conference, he revealed his batting role in the series. Rahul made it clear that he will continue to bat in the middle order. He said, “I will bat at number six throughout the series.”

Pant to feature only as wicketkeeper if selected
Questions were raised about the roles of Rishabh Pant and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Pant is returning to the ODI setup after the Champions Trophy, while Gaikwad is back in this format after almost two years. When asked if Pant could play purely as a batsman, Rahul clarified that although Pant is capable of doing so, if he makes it into the playing XI, he will be the designated wicketkeeper. Rahul added, “Everyone has seen the talent Pant brings. He can play as a specialist batter, but if he’s in the XI, he will be the one wearing the wicketkeeping gloves.”

Ruturaj Gaikwad will get opportunities
On Gaikwad’s chances, Rahul did not confirm whether he would play in the opening ODI in Ranchi, but assured that the right-hander will definitely feature at some point in the series. Rahul said, “Ruturaj Gaikwad is a fantastic player. He has performed well in the limited chances he has received. He will be given opportunities in this series.”
