The first day of the India vs West Indies Test in Ahmedabad turned into a nightmare for the visitors as they collapsed for just 162 runs in 44.1 overs. Opting to bat first after winning the toss, the Windies failed to handle India’s pace and spin attack, losing all their wickets inside 50 overs.
Siraj and Bumrah Lead the Charge
Mohammed Siraj was the star with the ball, picking up four key wickets including Tagnarine Chanderpaul, Brandon King, Alick Athanase, and West Indies skipper Roston Chase. Jasprit Bumrah bagged three wickets, while Kuldeep Yadav claimed two and Washington Sundar added one to complete the demolition. Among West Indies batters, Justin Greaves top-scored with a fighting 32, while Shai Hope (26) and Chase (24) offered some resistance before the collapse.
Bumrah Creates History
Bumrah did more than just trouble the batsmen—he etched his name in the record books. By reaching the landmark of 50 Test wickets on Indian soil, he became the fastest fast bowler to do so. He achieved the feat in just 24 innings (1747 balls), equaling the long-standing record of India’s pace legend Javagal Srinath.
Outstanding Home Record
Interestingly, Bumrah’s bowling record in India has surpassed expectations, despite his reputation as an overseas specialist. In home conditions, he has taken 50 wickets across 13 Tests at an extraordinary average of 17, with a strike rate of 42.4—better than any other Indian fast bowler. Comparatively, his overseas record stands at 172 wickets in 36 Tests at an average of 20.5.
India now has a strong upper hand after bundling the visitors cheaply, with their pace duo leading the way in yet another commanding bowling display.
