The Independence Day holiday window has long been one of the most attractive release periods for the Indian film industry. The national holiday, combined with the possibility of an extended weekend, often encourages producers to bring major films to theatres at the same time.
That strategy has resulted in several memorable box office battles over the years. In 2026, the competition is between Emraan Hashmi's Awarapan 2 and Sunny Deol's Partition 1947. Their theatrical runs have only just begun, so the eventual winner is yet to be decided.
Looking back, however, Independence Day clashes have delivered everything from two simultaneous hits to completely one-sided contests.
Here are 10 notable clashes around the August 15 release window.
1. Awarapan 2 vs Partition 1947 – 2026
This year's Independence Day battle features two very different Bollywood films.
Awarapan 2 brings Emraan Hashmi back as Shivam, reviving the world of his 2007 film Awarapan. On the other side is Sunny Deol's Partition 1947.
Early trends have generated considerable interest in the contest, but both films have only started their theatrical journeys. Their final box office verdicts will depend on how well they sustain collections over the coming days and weeks.
2. War 2 vs Coolie – 2025
The 2025 Independence Day period witnessed a huge pan-India battle between War 2 and Coolie.
War 2 featured Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR and Kiara Advani and expanded Yash Raj Films' spy universe. Despite significant expectations and a strong initial response in several markets, the film reportedly finished with collections close to ₹400 crore.
Rajinikanth's Coolie, which also featured several prominent names, emerged as the bigger worldwide grosser, reportedly collecting more than ₹650 crore.
3. Stree 2 vs Khel Khel Mein vs Vedaa – 2024
August 15, 2024 delivered a rare three-way Bollywood clash.
Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao's Stree 2 competed against Akshay Kumar's Khel Khel Mein and John Abraham's Vedaa.
The result was overwhelmingly in favour of Stree 2. The horror-comedy became a massive commercial success and crossed ₹600 crore in India, while its reported worldwide collection went substantially higher.
Neither Khel Khel Mein nor Vedaa could come close to matching its performance.
4. Gadar 2 vs OMG 2 – 2023
One of the most successful Independence Day-period clashes came in 2023.
Sunny Deol's Gadar 2 and Akshay Kumar-Pankaj Tripathi starrer OMG 2 arrived in cinemas together, yet both managed to find large audiences.
Gadar 2 became an extraordinary blockbuster, crossing ₹500 crore net in India.
OMG 2 also performed strongly despite its adult certification, collecting more than ₹150 crore net domestically.
Instead of one film destroying the other's business, this clash demonstrated that two releases can succeed simultaneously when audience demand is strong enough.
5. Laal Singh Chaddha vs Raksha Bandhan – 2022
Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor's Laal Singh Chaddha faced Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar's Raksha Bandhan during the 2022 holiday period.
Neither film delivered the kind of theatrical performance expected from its star cast.
Laal Singh Chaddha reportedly finished with around ₹129 crore worldwide, while Raksha Bandhan collected approximately ₹61 crore globally.
6. Mission Mangal vs Batla House – 2019
The 2019 clash proved that two films targeting different audiences could perform well simultaneously.
Akshay Kumar's Mission Mangal became a major success and crossed ₹200 crore net in India.
John Abraham's Batla House also found its audience and crossed the ₹100 crore mark domestically.
There was no comparable theatrical Independence Day clash in 2020 because of pandemic-related cinema closures, while theatrical release patterns remained disrupted in 2021.
7. Gold vs Satyameva Jayate – 2018
Akshay Kumar's sports drama Gold competed against John Abraham and Manoj Bajpayee's action film Satyameva Jayate in 2018.
Gold reportedly earned around ₹158 crore worldwide, while Satyameva Jayate collected approximately ₹110 crore globally.
Both films managed to attract audiences despite releasing together.
8. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and Jab Harry Met Sejal – 2017 Holiday Period
Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar's Toilet: Ek Prem Katha emerged as a major commercial success in 2017, eventually earning more than ₹200 crore worldwide.
Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma's Jab Harry Met Sejal, which had arrived shortly before it, failed to maintain the same momentum despite considerable pre-release expectations.
Toilet: Ek Prem Katha ultimately emerged as the stronger performer of the two films during the broader Independence Day box office period.
9. Rustom vs Mohenjo Daro – 2016
The 2016 box office battle brought Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan face-to-face.
Akshay's crime thriller Rustom competed against Hrithik's expensive historical drama Mohenjo Daro.
Rustom emerged as the clear winner and became a major commercial success. Its reported worldwide gross was above ₹200 crore.
Mohenjo Daro, despite its scale and production budget, performed below expectations and reportedly finished with worldwide earnings of a little over ₹100 crore.
10. Brothers and Gaur Hari Dastaan – 2015
Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra starred in Brothers, the Hindi adaptation of the Hollywood film Warrior.
The sports-action drama reportedly grossed around ₹140 crore worldwide but received a mixed commercial verdict considering its scale and expectations.
The same release period also saw the arrival of Gour Hari Dastaan, starring Vinay Pathak, Konkona Sen Sharma and Ranvir Shorey. The smaller biographical drama remained limited at the box office.

Which Independence Day Release Earned the Most?
Among the films discussed here, Stree 2 stands out as the biggest worldwide box office performer, with reported global earnings of well over ₹800 crore.
Gadar 2 also delivered a historic theatrical run in 2023, while Coolie emerged as another major worldwide grosser during the 2025 holiday period.
The numbers show why filmmakers continue to target the Independence Day window. A clash certainly increases competition for screens and audiences, but history also demonstrates that multiple films can succeed together if they offer audiences something compelling.
The next question is whether Awarapan 2 or Partition 1947 can eventually join the list of memorable Independence Day box office winners.
