The controversy surrounding Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman and his absence from the IPL has now taken a bigger turn. After Bangladesh earlier refused to tour India for the T20 World Cup, the Bangladeshi government has reportedly imposed a ban on the broadcast of the Indian Premier League in the country.
The IPL is one of the most-watched cricket leagues globally, with live telecast and streaming available in over 120 countries. Despite its massive reach, there are still a few regions where IPL matches are not officially broadcast.
Pakistan: Long-Standing Ban
Even before the situation in Bangladesh, the IPL has not been telecast in Pakistan. For several years now, no television channel or official digital platform has shown IPL matches there. While some fans try to access the league using VPN services, there is no authorised broadcast available in Pakistan.
Bangladesh: Temporary Broadcast Ban
Until recently, the IPL enjoyed a strong viewership in Bangladesh, with matches aired on local sports channels such as T Sports. However, the current government decision to block IPL telecast has come as a major disappointment for Bangladeshi fans, especially given the league’s popularity in the country.
Other Regions with Limited or No Coverage
Apart from Pakistan and Bangladesh, the IPL is not broadcast in:
-
Several African countries, particularly outside Sub-Saharan Africa
-
Some Central Asian nations
-
A few small island countries where cricket has little or no following
That said, these regions form a very small part of the global map. Streaming platforms like YuppTV ensure IPL coverage in more than 70 countries, including continental Europe, Central and South America, parts of Southeast Asia, Australia and Sri Lanka.
Strong Bangladesh–IPL Connection
The ban is particularly striking because many Bangladeshi cricketers have featured in the IPL over the years. Players such as Abdur Razzak, Mohammad Ashraful, Mashrafe Mortaza, Litton Das and Mustafizur Rahman have all represented IPL franchises, helping the league build a huge fan base in Bangladesh.
