Children often have a soft spot for chocolates, candies and other sweet treats. While there's nothing wrong with enjoying sweets occasionally, parents can also make healthier homemade alternatives using ingredients such as fruits, nuts, dates and dark chocolate.
These easy recipes can satisfy your child's sweet cravings while adding nutritious ingredients to their snack time. Here are five delicious ideas you can try at home.
1. Chocolate-Filled Dates
Give simple dates a delicious chocolate makeover. Remove the seeds from the dates and fill them with peanut butter and chopped nuts such as almonds, walnuts, pistachios and cashews.
You can also drizzle them with a little melted dark chocolate or add unsweetened cocoa powder. Place the prepared dates in the refrigerator or freezer for a short while until they firm up. They make a naturally sweet, bite-sized treat.
2. Chocolate Makhana and Nuts
Makhana can be turned into a crunchy chocolate snack that children will love. Lightly roast the lotus seeds until crisp.
Melt some dark chocolate with a small amount of coconut oil or butter using a double boiler. Add a pinch of cinnamon for extra flavour. If you want additional sweetness, you can use a little date paste.
Mix the roasted makhana into the chocolate and allow it to set. You can serve it as a snack or use it as a crunchy topping for milk or yogurt. The same chocolate coating can also be used with nuts such as almonds, cashews, walnuts and pine nuts.
3. Chocolate-Coated Fruits
Fruits become much more exciting for children when paired with a little chocolate. Try dipping strawberries, banana slices, kiwi, apples, cherries or black grapes in melted dark chocolate.
Because fruits are naturally sweet, you don't necessarily need to add extra sugar. Let the chocolate coating set in the refrigerator and serve them chilled.
4. Homemade Date and Nut Laddoos
For a wholesome homemade sweet, combine dates and nuts. Roast a variety of nuts in a small amount of ghee and crush them coarsely.
Remove the seeds from the dates and blend them into a soft mixture. Combine the dates with the crushed nuts and shape the mixture into small laddoos using lightly greased hands.
These bite-sized treats are easy to prepare and can be made without refined sugar.
5. Creamy Chocolate Mousse
You can also make a simple chocolate mousse using Greek yogurt. Melt dark chocolate in a double boiler and allow it to cool slightly.
Combine the melted chocolate with Greek yogurt and unsweetened cocoa powder. Add a tiny pinch of salt and blend until the mixture becomes smooth and creamy.
Transfer it to serving glasses and refrigerate until chilled. Top with fresh fruit, a little grated chocolate or a few chocolate chips before serving.
A Tasty Way to Make Snacks More Nutritious
Homemade treats give parents more control over the ingredients while allowing children to enjoy the flavours they love. Dates, fruits, nuts, yogurt and dark chocolate can be combined in different ways to create fun snacks without relying entirely on packaged sweets.
However, these treats still contain naturally occurring or added sugars and should be served in age-appropriate portions as part of a balanced diet. Also, chop nuts appropriately or use nut butter for younger children to reduce choking risks.
