The kitchen is not just connected to our health but also to the happiness of the entire family. Food prepared with love by our mothers, grandmothers, or any family member often involves time-consuming and tiring tasks. Sometimes, these repetitive or difficult kitchen chores can feel frustrating. However, with the right techniques, even the most challenging tasks can become quick and hassle-free.
Cooking is an art, and like any art, it becomes easier with the right knowledge. Here are some simple yet effective kitchen hacks that can save time and effort — from removing coconut kernels to cutting jackfruit, cabbage, and broccoli the right way.
Easy way to remove coconut kernel
Coconut is widely used to enhance the flavor of food, desserts, and even religious offerings. However, breaking a coconut and removing its kernel can be tricky, especially for those who don’t use it regularly.
To make this easier, tap firmly along the three natural lines around the coconut using a rolling pin or any heavy object. The shell will crack evenly and loosen from the kernel. After breaking it open, gently separate the kernel from the shell using a knife. Immediately place the coconut pieces in cold water — this helps the kernel detach more easily from the shell.
Hassle-free method to cut jackfruit
Cutting jackfruit is often avoided because of the sticky milk (latex) that oozes out, making hands and knives difficult to handle. The thick peel also adds to the challenge.
Before cutting, apply mustard oil on the knife and your hands. Cut a small portion from the top (the stem side) and let the jackfruit rest for a minute so the sticky milk drains out. Repeat the same process on the opposite side. Once the milk settles, wipe it off and cut the jackfruit from the center using a sharp knife, rotating it from both sides. Clean the central stem and continue cutting — this method makes the process much easier and less messy.
Clean and easy way to chop cabbage
If chopping cabbage creates a mess or feels difficult, try this simple trick. First, cut the cabbage into two halves and remove the hard stem. Cut each half into two parts again. Slowly separate the leaves, apply light pressure with your palm, and chop them as needed. This method ensures even cutting and keeps the workspace clean.
Correct way to cut broccoli
Many people cut broccoli the same way as cabbage, which is not ideal. The right method is to separate each floret from the main stem instead of cutting it in half. This keeps the florets intact, helps them cook evenly, and improves their appearance after cooking.
