Lost Your Phone? This New Android Feature Can Make Your Data Much Harder to Steal

Losing a smartphone is no longer just about losing an expensive device. A phone can contain private photos, banking apps, emails, saved passwords, personal messages and access to important online accounts. That is why smartphone theft has become a much bigger digital-security concern.
Google is introducing a stronger set of security protections with Android 17, including features designed to make stolen phones harder to unlock and misuse.
Your stolen phone could become much harder to unlock
Android 17 is adding stronger protections against repeated PIN and password guessing. On supported devices, the number of failed attempts will be more restricted and the waiting period between attempts can increase.
This is particularly useful if someone physically steals your phone and tries to guess the screen-lock code rather than immediately wiping the device.
Theft Detection Lock can react to suspicious movement
Google is also expanding theft-protection features such as Theft Detection Lock and Remote Lock.
The idea is simple: if the phone detects behaviour associated with a theft, it can automatically lock itself. Remote Lock can also allow a user to secure the device remotely instead of waiting until they recover it. Google says these protections are being enabled by default on new Android 17 devices, as well as devices that are freshly reset or upgraded to the latest operating system.
Your IMEI can help identify the device
Another useful addition is easier access to the phone's IMEI from the lock screen on supported Android devices.
The IMEI is a unique identifier associated with a mobile device. Having it accessible can help law enforcement, manufacturers or network operators verify ownership and assist with device recovery.
Android is also fighting dangerous apps
The security changes aren't limited to stolen phones.
Google is expanding Live Threat Detection, which uses on-device AI to identify suspicious application behaviour. Android can warn users when apps attempt potentially harmful activities, including abusing accessibility permissions or forwarding SMS messages. Chrome on Android is also adding APK scanning to identify known malware before an app is downloaded.
OTPs are getting additional protection
One-time passwords are frequently targeted by scammers attempting to take control of online accounts.
Android now automatically hides sensitive security codes from most apps for a limited period, helping prevent malicious applications with inappropriate SMS access from reading them.
You will get more control over location sharing
Android 17 is also changing the way users can share their precise location with apps.
Instead of giving an application ongoing access, users can provide temporary precise-location access for a particular task while the app is being actively used. A new location indicator can also show when an app is accessing location information.
What should Android users do?
You don't have to wait for every new feature to improve your phone's security. Start with these basic steps:
- Use a strong screen-lock PIN or password.
- Keep Android and your apps updated.
- Enable remote-device finding and locking.
- Avoid installing APKs from unknown sources.
- Don't share OTPs or verification codes with anyone.
- Review which apps have access to SMS, accessibility, location and other sensitive permissions.
- Turn on stronger security protections if your phone supports them.
With smartphones becoming increasingly central to banking, communication and personal data, protecting the phone itself is becoming just as important as protecting individual accounts. Android's latest security upgrades show that future phone security is moving beyond passwords and toward automatic, AI-powered protection.
