LPG Rules Update: How many gas cylinders can you buy in a year? Read what the rules say

The Gulf War has affected fuel supplies in India. There is a shortage of LPG cylinders in Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, and other important cities in Maharashtra. This is having a serious impact on hotels and other businesses. There are long queues outside gas agencies for cylinders, and in many places, there are complaints of cylinders not being available even after booking. The government has now imposed a 25-day time limit for gas booking. Therefore, many people are wondering, 'How many gas cylinders can one buy in a year?' The government has set some rules and conditions regarding this, let's learn about them today.

After the Gulf War broke out, the prices of domestic and commercial LPG cylinders in India changed. The government increased prices, but supply disruptions from Gulf countries limited supply. This affected the distribution of both commercial and domestic gas cylinders. It has also emerged that there is a black market for gas cylinders in many places. In some places, the price of a gas cylinder is double, while in others, it is one and a half times higher. To prevent black marketing, the government has tightened the rules for distribution and booking. So, how many LPG cylinders can a family legally own or book in a year? This question arose in people's minds.

How many gas cylinders can be booked in a year?
According to current rules, a person can purchase up to 12 subsidized cylinders weighing 14.2 kg each in a year. These cylinders are provided at subsidized rates under a government scheme. For those using 5 kg domestic cylinders, the limit is 34. This means that consumers can book only one 14.2 kg cylinder per month. However, domestic consumers can also book more cylinders than their subsidized quota at the market rate, but they will have to pay extra for this.

25-day booking rule -
You can buy 12 subsidized cylinders weighing 14.2 kg. But apart from that, you can buy 3 more cylinders in a year by paying extra. This means that once a person's annual quota of subsidized gas cylinders is exhausted, three more cylinders can be purchased at non-subsidized commercial rates. Meanwhile, to prevent black marketing, the government has set a 25-day gap between two bookings. Currently, a family can book around 15 LPG cylinders in a year. This includes 12 subsidized and 3 non-subsidized cylinders. The 25-day gap rule has to be followed for this booking.

How many cylinders can be kept in the house at a time?

According to regulations, domestic LPG consumers can store a maximum of two cylinders at a time. This includes one cylinder for use and one as a backup. According to the 2016 regulations, a safety permit is required for storing more LPG cylinders. This is because LPG is a highly flammable fuel. Storing multiple cylinders increases the risk of accidents. However, for commercial use, up to 100 kg of LPG can be stored.
