What is the story of the Mahabharata?
According to the story of the Mahabharata, on the 16th day of the war, Bhima encountered Duryodhana's younger brother, Dushasana. Seeing Dushasana, Bhima became enraged, as he once again remembered the disrobing and insulting of Draupadi. Even as Bhima faced Dushasana on the battlefield, he was filled with hatred for his cousin. Seeing him, Bhima roared, "Today no one can stop me from fulfilling my promise."
Bhima and Dushasana then fought. Finally, Bhima severely wounded Dushasana. He threw Dushasana to the ground in the middle of Kurukshetra. He then tore open his chest. As his chest was torn, hot blood gushing from his heart. After drinking the blood, Bhima said, "Now my promise has been fulfilled, and Draupadi's insult has been avenged."
Draupadi smears Dushasan's blood on her hair
Bhima then returned from Kurukshetra with Dushasana's blood in his hand to Draupadi. As promised, Draupadi applied the blood to her hair, thus saving Draupadi's life. After the Pandavas defeated Draupadi in a game of Chaupar, on Duryodhana's orders, Dushasana dragged Draupadi into the assembly by her hair and began stripping her.
Humiliated by the stripping, Draupadi vowed to tie her hair only after washing it with Dushasana's blood. Bhima vowed not to show his face to his ancestors until he had drunk the blood from Dushasana's heart.
