Meta Launches Anti-Scam Tools: WhatsApp Introduces ‘Device Linkage Warning’ Feature

Meta Platforms has announced a series of new anti-scam and security features across its major platforms—WhatsApp, Facebook and Facebook Messenger—aimed at protecting users from online fraud and hacking attempts.

The company says the new tools include in-app alerts, improved safety controls and expanded AI-based scam detection designed to help people identify suspicious activity before it causes harm.

WhatsApp Introduces ‘Device Linkage Warning’

The most significant update is the “Device Linkage Warning” feature on WhatsApp.

This feature focuses on protecting the platform’s linked-device system, which allows users to access their WhatsApp chats on multiple devices such as laptops, tablets and desktops.

While this feature is useful, cybercriminals have sometimes tried to exploit device linking to gain unauthorized access to accounts.

With the new update:

  • Users will receive an instant alert if someone attempts to link a new device to their WhatsApp account.

  • The warning will ask users to review the request carefully before approving it.

  • WhatsApp will display additional security information, explaining that a linked device can access chat messages.

This system is designed to prevent scammers from secretly connecting a device to a victim’s account.

Stronger Scam Protection on Messenger

Meta is also expanding AI-powered scam detection on Facebook Messenger.

Under the new update:

  • Messenger will analyze conversation patterns with unknown contacts.

  • If the system detects behavior linked to common scams, users will see warning notifications.

  • The alerts will encourage users to avoid sharing personal or financial information.

Meta says the AI protection will gradually expand to more countries worldwide.

Safer Experience Across Meta Platforms

According to Meta Platforms, these updates are part of a broader effort to fight digital fraud and account takeovers.

The company is also working with:

  • Financial institutions

  • Technology companies

  • Cybersecurity experts

to build stronger tools against online scams.
