MG Gloster May Be Discontinued Despite Beating Fortuner; Falling Sales Raise Questions

Once considered a strong rival to the Toyota Fortuner, the MG Gloster has been a prominent name in India’s full-size SUV segment since its launch, known for its rich feature list and value-for-money positioning. However, the SUV may soon be nearing the end of the road, with reports suggesting that MG is preparing to discontinue the model.

At the 2025 India Mobility Expo, JSW MG Motor India introduced its new flagship ICE SUV, the Majestor. At the time, the company had indicated that the Majestor would be sold alongside the Gloster, which was then its flagship internal combustion engine SUV. Contrary to that earlier stance, recent media reports now claim that the Gloster could be phased out altogether.

Declining sales likely behind the move
One of the main reasons cited for the possible discontinuation is weak sales performance. Over the past 12 months, the Gloster reportedly sold just 321 units. In three of those months, sales failed to reach double digits, and in another three months, they remained in single digits. Such consistently low numbers are believed to have prompted MG to rethink its SUV portfolio.

Industry observers say the newly launched Majestor is likely to take the Gloster’s place. While positioned as a fresh and more premium offering, the Majestor is essentially an evolution of the Gloster. It is larger, more aggressively styled, better equipped, and claims improved off-road capability, while still being based on the same underlying platform.

If the reports turn out to be true, the discontinuation of the Gloster would mark a surprising shift in strategy—especially after MG’s earlier assurance that both SUVs would coexist. For now, the company has not made any official announcement, leaving the future of the Gloster uncertain.
