Former Australia all-rounder Moises Henriques is reportedly set to begin a new chapter in his cricketing journey by representing Portugal in upcoming international competitions, including the T20 World Cup qualifiers.
Born in Portugal before moving to Australia at a young age, Henriques rose through the Australian cricket system and went on to represent the national team across formats. He made his international debut in 2009 and played Tests, ODIs, and T20Is for Australia.
From Australia to Portugal
Henriques is now expected to feature for Portugal in the sub-regional qualifiers scheduled for August. His participation could mark a significant moment for Portuguese cricket, especially given his international experience and IPL exposure.
During his career, he has also played in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for multiple franchises, including Punjab Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Delhi Capitals, and Kolkata Knight Riders.
International and IPL career
For Australia, Henriques played across formats and contributed as a seam-bowling all-rounder. In the IPL, he has been a useful utility player, scoring over 1,000 runs and taking more than 40 wickets across his career.
Mental health struggles revealed
Beyond cricket, Henriques has also spoken openly about his mental health struggles. He revealed that in 2017, he suffered from severe clinical depression during his playing days.
In a past interview, he shared that during a difficult period, he experienced emotional breakdowns and even had suicidal thoughts while returning from a domestic match. However, he was able to step back and seek help, eventually continuing his professional career.
A career of resilience and change
Henriques’ journey reflects both professional evolution and personal resilience—from representing Australia at the highest level to now potentially playing for Portugal, while also openly discussing the importance of mental health awareness in sport.
