Monty Panesar Blames Karun Nair for Lord’s Defeat, Backs Sai Sudharsan for Manchester Test

India’s narrow 22-run loss to England in the third Test at Lord’s has reignited debate over the team’s fragile middle order—particularly the number three position, currently held by Karun Nair. Former England spinner Monty Panesar has now publicly criticised Nair's performance and backed young batter Sai Sudharsan to be given another opportunity in the upcoming Manchester Test.

"Number Three Is India’s Weakest Spot": Monty Panesar

Speaking on Shazia Abbas’s YouTube channel, Panesar said:

“The way Karun Nair was dismissed on Day 4 at Lord’s shifted the momentum. He’s had his chances but hasn't scored big. India’s number three is their weakest link right now. I’d pick Sai Sudharsan instead in Manchester.”

A Look at the Numbers

  • Karun Nair in the Lord’s Test:

    • 1st innings: 40

    • 2nd innings: 14

  • Previous Test:

    • 1st innings: 31

    • 2nd innings: 26

While Nair has shown glimpses of form, his inability to convert starts into substantial scores has become a growing concern—especially in a series where India desperately needs solidity at the top.

Sudharsan’s Brief Stint and Possible Return

Sai Sudharsan made his Test debut in the Leeds Test, but failed to impress:

  • 1st innings: 0

  • 2nd innings: 30

He was dropped after just one game, while Nair was retained for the next two Tests. However, with the series on the line, Team India may consider reinstating Sudharsan, hoping that the left-hander brings more stability and promise at the crucial No. 3 position.

Selection Dilemma Ahead of Must-Win Manchester Test

With India trailing in the five-match series, the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester, has become a must-win fixture. Changes in the batting line-up, especially at number three, are now being seen as necessary, not optional.

All eyes are now on the team management and selectors as they weigh experience against potential heading into one of the most critical matches of the series.
