Mosquitoes Bothering Your Little One? Try These 5 Simple Ways to Keep Insects Away

The monsoon season brings relief from the heat, but it can also create ideal conditions for mosquitoes and other insects to thrive. Standing water, damp corners and increased humidity can lead to more mosquitoes around the home, while children are particularly likely to get bitten because they spend time playing indoors and outdoors.
Instead of relying only on chemical products, parents can focus on simple preventive measures to reduce mosquito exposure. Here are five things you can do to make your home more comfortable and safer for children during the rainy season.
1. Try a Homemade Natural Repellent
A simple homemade mixture can be prepared using coconut oil along with neem and citronella oils. You can mix a few drops of neem oil and citronella oil into coconut oil and add a little aloe vera gel to create a smooth mixture.
However, because young children's skin can be sensitive, always perform a small patch test first and avoid applying essential oils directly to the skin. For infants and very young children, it's safer to ask a paediatrician before using any homemade or essential-oil-based repellent.
2. Keep the House Dry and Clean
Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, so regularly check your home for places where water may collect. Empty water from flower-pot trays, buckets, coolers and other containers.
Keep damp areas clean and make sure drains are not blocked. Regular cleaning can help reduce the places where mosquitoes and other insects may gather.
3. Dress Children in Full-Length Clothes
When your child is playing outside during the evening or in areas where mosquitoes are common, dress them in lightweight, breathable clothing that covers their arms and legs.
Loose-fitting full-sleeved tops and full-length trousers can reduce the amount of exposed skin available for mosquito bites. Light cotton clothing can be particularly comfortable during humid weather.
4. Use a Mosquito Net at Night
A mosquito net can provide a physical barrier between your child and mosquitoes while they sleep. It can be especially useful for babies and young children.
Make sure the net is properly secured and does not have gaps through which mosquitoes can enter. For babies, follow safe-sleep recommendations and ensure the net cannot fall onto or become entangled around the child.
5. Clean Floors and Corners Regularly
Neem water is traditionally used in many households for cleaning. Keeping floors, corners, windows and areas around plants clean can help reduce insect-friendly conditions.
More importantly, remove standing water and keep flower pots, balconies and other damp areas dry wherever possible. If you use any cleaning or insect-repellent solution around children, keep the product away from their reach and follow its safety instructions.
Protect Your Child From Bites the Smart Way
Mosquito control is not about relying on a single remedy. Keeping the surroundings clean, eliminating stagnant water, covering exposed skin and using physical barriers such as mosquito nets can collectively reduce mosquito exposure.
If your child develops significant swelling, difficulty breathing, fever or other unusual symptoms after an insect bite, seek medical attention rather than relying on home remedies.
