How did tension start in Nepal?
Tensions in Nepal began when two Muslim youths, Haider Ansari and Amanat Ansari, from Kamala Municipality in Dhanusha district allegedly posted a video on social media containing derogatory remarks against certain religious communities. The video soon sparked communal tensions in Dhanusha and Parsa districts.
People handed over 2 accused to the police
Locals quickly apprehended the two young men and handed them over to the police, saying the video threatened communal harmony. However, soon after, a mosque in the Sakhua Maran area of Kamla was vandalized, further fueling communal tensions. People took to the streets.
Protesters pelted stones at the police
During the protest, demonstrators threw stones at police officers and vandalized the local police station. Police said, "Police fired about half a dozen tear gas shells at the protesters to control the situation."
Hindu organizations accused of insulting gods and goddesses
During the protests, Hindu organizations alleged that derogatory remarks were made against their deities, further escalating the situation. Authorities have also imposed a curfew in Birgunj, as security agencies continue to monitor the situation.
India-Nepal border sealed
In view of the tense atmosphere in Birgunj and surrounding areas, security has been increased along the India-Nepal border. The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has completely sealed the border. Indian security forces have completely blocked civilian movement across the border, except for emergency services. The Friendship Bridge connecting India and Nepal is under special surveillance. Everyone crossing the border is being thoroughly checked.
