Pension Rules: Your salary and pension will be checked 4 years before retirement, a big announcement by the government

Important news has emerged for central government employees and pensioners. Employees fear losing money at retirement due to errors in salary or pension payments. In some cases, this can even lead to having to recover previously received funds. To avoid this situation, the central government has emphasized advance verification of service records, salary fixation, and pension-related documents. This decision is expected to provide relief to 7 million central government employees and pensioners.

Document verification four years before retirement.
According to directives from the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, a process will be implemented to verify employees' service records, salary fixation, and pension details four years before their retirement. This will reduce the chance of errors emerging at the very last stage of retirement and help streamline the pension process.

Errors in salary fixation must be corrected in a timely manner.
After salary fixation orders for promotions, increments, or ACP/MACP schemes are issued, they must be verified. This process should be completed within three months or before the end of the relevant financial year. This will help in timely detection of salary fixation errors and reduce the risk of employees facing sudden financial difficulties after retirement.

If an error is found, will the officials be held accountable?
Even after a verification certificate is issued by the Pay and Accounts Office, any errors in salary determination may result in liability being fixed against the relevant sanctioning officials. However, it's important to check the applicable rules and official orders before concluding that no recovery will be made from employees under any circumstances.

According to a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), the central government's total pension
expenditure increased by 12.3% to ₹3.46 lakh crore in fiscal year 2025. It states that defense pensions account for 45.57% of the total, while civilian pensions account for 33.57%.
