Petroleum Ministry takes major decision on 5 kg LPG cylinder, check details

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has said that the daily quantity of 5 kg FTL (Free Trade LPG) cylinders given to each state for distribution among migrant workers is being doubled.

In its letter to the Chief Secretaries of all States and Union Territories, the Ministry said that this increase is based on the average daily supply (number of cylinders) given to migrant workers during March 2-3, and is over and above the earlier limit of 20% as specified in the Ministry's letter dated March 21, 2026.

These 5 kg FTL cylinders will be provided to the respective state governments or their food/civil supplies departments. These cylinders will be supplied exclusively to migrant workers, with logistical and operational support from oil marketing companies (OMCs).

The ministry's letter states, "It is informed that the daily quantity of 5kg FTL cylinders available for distribution to migrant workers in each state is being doubled based on the average daily supply (number of cylinders) to migrant workers during March 2-3, 2026, which is above the 20% limit specified in paragraph 2(a) of the letter dated March 21, 2026. These 5kg FTL cylinders will be with the State Government/its Food/Civil Supplies Department, which will supply them to migrant workers only within their state with the help of OMCs."

In a relief to migrant workers, students and daily wage labourers, the government has allowed the sale of 5-kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders without address proof.

People can now get these cylinders from authorized distributors by simply showing a valid ID card.

According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, more than 90,000 five-kilogram FTL cylinders were sold in a single day. Nearly 6.6 lakh cylinders have been sold across the country since March 23, 2026.

The ministry has described the move as a major effort to ensure uninterrupted availability of petroleum products and LPG across the country, especially amid the escalating conflict in West Asia.

The government has also asked citizens not to indulge in panic buying or make unnecessary LPG bookings, and advised people to rely only on official sources for information.
