Fear looms large over Tetgama village in Bihar's Purnia district, where six members of a tribal family were burnt alive on the night of July 6–7. Now, the victim Babulal Oraon’s three brothers claim they too are receiving death threats. The attackers, they allege, have warned them of being burnt alive — just like Babulal and his family.

“We’re being threatened with the same fate”

Babulal’s brother, Arjun Oraon, said that ever since the incident, their lives have been under constant threat. “We have been told that all three of us brothers will be reduced to ashes next,” he said. Fearing for their safety, the families have taken shelter in the MNREGA Bhawan. Despite the looming danger, they say police protection has still not been provided.

Accused already in custody, but fear persists

The police have so far arrested three people — including main accused Nakul Oraon, his associate Chhotu Oraon, and tractor driver Mohammad Sanaul who allegedly helped dispose of the bodies. A case has been registered against 23 named and 150 unnamed persons from the village and nearby areas. Shockingly, relatives of some accused are now threatening Babulal’s surviving brothers.

Accused blames villagers, claims a panchayat knew everything

In a new twist, the main accused Nakul Oraon has spoken to the media from jail, claiming that over 200 people from three villages were involved in the killings. He also alleged that the local Mukhiya and Sarpanch knew about the planned attack and a panchayat meeting had taken place beforehand.

Administration visits, but no real relief yet

While senior district officials have been making rounds of the village, the victims allege that real help is yet to come. “They are just visiting, scolding subordinates, and issuing instructions. But no one has taken responsibility for our security,” said a family member. Meanwhile, the administration claims to be supplying ration and aid to affected families.
