October 2026 is shaping up to be a packed month for South Indian cinema. With the festive season bringing audiences to theatres, several highly anticipated films featuring some of the industry's biggest stars are scheduled to release throughout the month.
From action and thrillers to comedy-drama and mythological stories, the lineup promises plenty of variety. The biggest attraction could be Rajinikanth's Jailer 2, while Vijay Deverakonda's Ranabali is also expected to generate considerable buzz.
October begins with a busy opening weekend
The South cinema release calendar gets underway on October 1 with Vijay Sethupathi's Battha.
The following day, October 2, will see several films arriving together. Shiva Rajkumar's Bell, Fahadh Faasil's Don't Trouble the Trouble and Sundeep Kishan's Sigma are all scheduled to hit theatres.
Nivin Pauly's Yezhu Kadhal Yezhu Malai is also part of the early-October lineup, creating a crowded opening phase for South releases.
These films will compete for audiences alongside major Bollywood releases, including Ajay Devgn's Drishyam 3.
The second half brings the biggest names
The excitement is expected to increase from October 9.
Venkatesh Daggubati's Aadarsh Kutumbam, also referred to as House No. 47, is scheduled for release on October 9.
But the biggest date on the calendar is October 15, when Rajinikanth returns with Jailer 2.
Just one day later, on October 16, Vijay Deverakonda's Ranabali is expected to arrive in theatres. The back-to-back releases could create a major box-office battle.
More releases before October ends
The entertainment continues through the final two weeks of the month.
Mamittha Baiju's Irandu Vaanam is scheduled for October 23, followed by Answara Rajan's Itlu Arjun on October 30.
Vishwak Sen's Cult is also slated for October 30. The actor has an ambitious release schedule, with additional films reportedly planned for November and December.
Jailer 2 could be Rajinikanth's biggest box-office milestone
The biggest spotlight will undoubtedly be on Jailer 2.
The first Jailer became one of Rajinikanth's most successful films, earning more than ₹600 crore worldwide. The sequel has therefore generated considerable expectations even before its theatrical release.
Trade estimates have suggested that Jailer 2 could potentially cross the ₹1,000-crore mark if it receives a strong audience response.
If that happens, it would represent a major milestone in Rajinikanth's career.
October could become a South-versus-Bollywood box-office battle
With several major South Indian films arriving alongside Bollywood releases, October could turn into one of the year's most competitive periods at the box office.
The real test will be whether audiences spread their attention across multiple releases or choose a few major titles.
For South cinema fans, however, October promises one thing for sure: a packed calendar featuring Rajinikanth, Vijay Deverakonda, Fahadh Faasil, Venkatesh, Shiva Rajkumar and several other major names.
