A major debate on Operation Sindoor, India’s most assertive cross-border anti-terror strike, is set to begin in Parliament next week. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will open the discussion in the Lok Sabha on Monday, with Home Minister Amit Shah and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also expected to participate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to make a key intervention during the debate.
The same discussion will start in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, where the same senior ministers will speak. Both houses will dedicate 16 hours each to the discussion.
BJP Finalizes Speakers, Prepares for Focused Debate
A meeting of senior ministers, chaired by Amit Shah, will be held on Friday evening to finalize the list of BJP speakers. Ministers including Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Arjun Meghwal will attend. Notably, this will be a special discussion, meaning no formal reply from the government will follow.
Other prominent leaders expected to participate include JP Nadda, Anurag Thakur, and Vijayant Jai Panda.
What Was Operation Sindoor?
Launched just past midnight on May 7, Operation Sindoor was India’s response to the April 22 Pahalgam massacre. It involved air-launched cruise missiles, loitering munitions, and long-range drones targeting nine terrorist hubs in Pakistan, including Muridke and Bahawalpur—operational bases of Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed.
Protests Stall Parliament on Friday
Friday’s parliamentary session was adjourned due to loud protests and sloganeering by the opposition. Despite Speaker Jagdambika Pal’s appeal for order, opposition MPs disrupted the session with placards and banners. Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will reconvene on July 28.
Opposition Demanded Discussion, Now Stalling: Rijiju
Kiren Rijiju criticized the opposition for creating a ruckus after the government agreed to their demand for a discussion. He said, “You asked for a discussion on Operation Sindoor, and the government agreed in the Business Advisory Committee. Yet you disrupted the House.”
He confirmed that Pahalgam attack will also be discussed next week, and emphasized that the opposition cannot dictate who speaks for the government or the sequence of debates.
