Sanjeev Kumar’s Bachelorhood: How a Slipper and Hema Malini’s Refusal Changed His Life

Bollywood is full of fascinating stories, some surprising and others sad. One such story is about the legendary actor Sanjeev Kumar, whose powerful performances in the 70s and 80s remain unforgettable. Despite his success, Sanjeev Kumar remained unmarried and passed away young at just 47. An intriguing tale surrounds why he never married—linked to none other than actress Hema Malini and a peculiar reason involving a slipper.

Born as Harihar Jethalal Jariwala on 9 July 1938 in Surat, Sanjeev Kumar made his Bollywood debut in 1960 with Hum Hindustani. His breakthrough came with the film Sachchai (1968), after which he delivered a series of hit films. During this time, he developed feelings for Hema Malini and hoped to marry her. Reports say Hema Malini liked Sanjeev Kumar as well.

Actress Aruna Irani revealed on The Kapil Sharma Show that Hema had indeed started liking Sanjeev Kumar and was even considering marriage. However, when Sanjeev went to discuss marriage, he appeared in a simple kurta-pyjama and slippers. According to Aruna, Hema Malini was put off by his casual style and felt he lacked sophistication. She reportedly said Sanjeev Kumar had no style, leading her to reject his proposal.

In 1980, Hema Malini married actor Dharmendra, and the couple had two daughters. Sanjeev Kumar, meanwhile, never married. Over his career, his name was linked with several actresses, but marriage eluded him. He passed away on 6 November 1985 in Mumbai.

Sanjeev Kumar’s film legacy is rich and varied. He starred in classics like Sholay, Aandhi, Koshish, Khilona, Angoor, Trishul, Seeta Aur Geeta, Mausam, Silsila, Jaani Dushman, Pati Patni Aur Woh, and many others, leaving behind a remarkable body of work that continues to be celebrated.
